How do I descale my Smarter Coffee machine?

If customers are using their machines regularly, we advise that they descale their coffee machine at least once a month in order to remove any scale build-up caused by water.

  1. Fill the water tank with coffee machine descaler and water to 12 cups. (The ratio will depend on the descaler instruction.)
  2. If you do not have a descaler (This is recommended) suitable for coffee machines, you can, instead, use white vinegar or lemon juice. The ratio for this is 4 cups white vinegar/lemon juice 8 cups water. (Filter water is preferred but tap will also be fine.)
  3. Position the carafe in place, select ‘filter 12 cups’ then ‘start’.
  4. When you start seeing water come through to the carafe, stop the brew and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour.
  5. Finish the brew by selecting filter then 12 cups.
  6. Then run 2 more cycles of filter 12 cups with just water to get all the limescale out and descaler out.

    The process you describe above does not work for the Smarter Coffee 2nd generation.  The unit presents you with a notification screen and menu with the need to perform a descale operation and then, once you set up the machine to complete the process (placing descaler in the unit etc.) and hit "start" on the descale notification screen, the unit DOES NOT allow you to stop the process once you "start seeing water come through to the carafe."  The descaler process is a step by step process where you need to select "continue" and such during descaling.

    You need more than one process depending on the device.  Please check your FAQ instructions and work against the devices you're providing guidance on less you be accused of "lazy man's FAQ!" ;-)
